Abstract

Aims: To evaluate and summarize current evidence on the relationship between the patient–nurse ratio staffing method and nurse employee outcomes.

Background: Evidence‐based decision‐making linking nurse staffing with staff‐re‐ lated outcomes is a much needed research area. Although multiple studies have in‐ vestigated this phenomenon, the evidence is mixed and fragmented.

Evaluation: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cinahl, Cochrane Library and the ERIC databases. Thirty studies were identified, analysing eight selected key nurse outcomes.

Key issue(s): Future research should focus on unit‐level data, incorporate other meth‐odologies and aim for comparability between different types of clinical settings as well as different health care systems.

Conclusion: A relationship between the patient–nurse ratio and specific staff‐related outcomes is confirmed by various studies. However, apart from the patient–nurse ratio other variables have to be taken into consideration to ensure quality of care (e.g., skill mix, the work environment and patient acuity).

Implications for Nursing Management: Hospital management should pursue the access and use of reliable data so that the validity and generalizability of evidence‐based research can be assessed, which in turn can be converted into policy guidelines.

Briefly describe the approach to study selection, critical appraisal (without naming the actual tool), data extraction (without naming the actual tool), data synthesis and assessing confidence in the findings. Briefly describe any notable deviations to the methodological approach taken.

Systematic review registration number (For Protocols ONLY): Report the registration number provided following registration of the protocol in
PROSPERO.

Results (For Reviews ONLY): The bulk of the abstract should be reserved to convey the main results of the review. Report the number and type of included studies and sample size, as well as any pertinent study characteristics. Summarize the overall quality of the included studies and notable risk of rigor. Report the number of findings and categories and final synthesized findings. Depending how many were generated in the review, report either the synthesized findings or abridged statements.

Conclusions (For Reviews ONLY): Provide a conclusion based on a general interpretation of the review findings, considering the methodological quality of the included studies and any limitations of the review. Briefly convey key recommendations for practice or policy and research.

Describe the rationale for the review in light of what is already known on the topic, including information that supports and justifies the selection of inclusion criteria. Key terms should be defined and operational definitions listed. Any variations in local understandings of clinical practice, health service management and client or patient experiences should be stated. Some indication that there is evidence available that will meet your inclusion criteria should be provided.
