NURS3006 The Professional Nurse

Question

Answered

Answers:

What skills might a graduate nurse needs to increase their employability?

The profession of nursing has many opportunities for the individuals who want to have a career in the sector of healthcare. When a person is appointed as nurse, it means that they need some crucial skills as this is a very high-stake job. The skills that the graduate nurse requires to increase their employability are having empathy and compassion (Brown & Crookes, 2016). When the nurse can show empathy to their patients, they can be classified as good nurse. The nurse needs to be firm so that they can give the required confidence to their patients. If a nurse posse this empathy and compassion, they are going to make huge difference for someone who is sick, distressed or scared of death (Brown & Crookes, 2016). The communication skill of a nurse is also one of the fundamental qualities of delivering a high-quality care. The nurse should be able to communicate with the other members of the healthcare as well as the patients and their family members (Brown & Crookes, 2016). The other skill that the graduate nurse must have been teamwork and multidisciplinary team working. This is very important and involves aspects such as the communication, support, and development at a level of both individual and group (Sisodia & Agarwal, 2017).  This skill is one of the most crucial and fundamental nursing skill irrespective of what culture or group the patient belongs to. Every nurse should consider themselves as team player if they want to build their employability. The nurse should also have the skills of efficient decision making on behalf of patients (Sisodia & Agarwal, 2017).

What is the importance of ongoing professional development in your own words and the requirements once registered?

Ongoing professional development is critical since it makes sure that I can remain proficient in my field. It is a continuous process that lasts the duration of my career as a professional. The public, the organization, the professional, and my career as a professional are all protected because of well-planned ongoing professional development. It will make sure that my skills remain up to date with those of colleagues in the relevant profession (Holley, 2016). It will assist me in maintaining and improving the expertise and abilities I required to provide competent performance to my clients, employers, and society. It will guarantee that I and my expertise remain current and appropriate. I can be more informed of my industry's shifting trends and objectives (Kloosterman, 2014).

My continued professional development would enable me to offer a valuable commitment to my group. On the job, I can improve my efficiency. This will help me grow in my profession by allowing me to progress into different roles where I can manage, supervise, inspire, coach, and educate others. It will assist me in remaining engaged and fascinating (Price & Reichert, 2017). Experience is a wonderful teacher, but it does imply that I continue to repeat my actions. Continuous professional development that focuses on new opportunities, learning, and skill sectors let me expand up to new opportunities, expertise, and skill domains (Price & Reichert, 2017).

Accepting accountability for my own abilities and recognizing when they have to be improved is an important part of becoming a professional. Understanding my requirements, organizing and conducting improvement events, evaluating my experience, implementing my knowledge, and discussing my learning with others are the criteria once registered (Sharma Pant and Poudel Panthi, 2018).

What are some concerns identified in the literature in transitioning to the role of a registered nurse?

The transition of role to the registered nurse can be full of many emotions which can be from being excessively happy or being excited about their job to be afraid, anxious, and uncertain. The transitioning period for a student can make them question everything, from their career choices, or whether they will be comfortable around the nurses that they have to work with. There are some common problems that can happen during the period of transition from student nurse to registered nurse (Barnes, 2015).

These are gaps that they face while applying their theoretical knowledge to practice. They may find it difficult to provide care to patients who are complex and are dealing with multiple comorbidities. Managing time in their busy schedules can also be difficult. The administration of medicines and the skills of patient assessment, skills of documentation can also be an issue during their initial days of transitioning (Barnes, 2015). They have very limited proficiency in managing and executing the technical skills, forming a partnership with the teams, and their role in decision making. They face problems in prioritizing unexpected events if there are any. They might also have a lack of excess of proper mentors or coaches and anxiety while performing certain tasks. Some of them also face bullying from their seniors (Barnes, 2015).

What do the following acronyms stand for and describe the roles of ALL the following organisations in your own words?

AHPRA: Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. This is the Australian National Organisation whose job is to implement the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme also known as the National Scheme all over Australia. It collaborates with 15 National Health Practitioner Boards. They together implement the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (AHPRA, 2022).

NMBA: Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. They help in forming a framework and codes for the nurses and midwives of Australia which is of national level (NMBA, 2022).  They play a very important role in making sure that the citizens of Australia are getting their treatment from nurses who are competent and eligible. They also handle notifications, complaints, regulations as well as any hearing related to discipline. They also assess if any foreign nurse practitioner wishes to work in Australia (NMBA, 2022).

ANMAC: Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council. This organisation helps in protecting the health and safety of the Australian community. They do so by promoting standards of very high quality for the education of the nurses and the midwives. It also helps in assessing the skills of the nurses and midwives who want to transfer under the program General Skilled Migration launched by the government of Australia (ANMAC, 2022).

ANMF: Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation. It is one of the largest organizations of nurses and midwives and supports unions of nurses nationally and on a professional basis. It can be defined as a national union that involves registered nurses, enrolled nurses, midwives, and the individuals who provide assistance while doing the nursing work (ANMF, 2022). It operates in every state and territory of Australia. They show a very significant interest in the standards which provide the framework for a care plan that is both safe and competent, offers direction regarding ways to proceed in a professional relationship, and also helps in minimizing risks related to public health (ANMF, 2022).

ACN. Australian College of Nursing. They help the nurses to become completely ready for any sort of challenges or expectations that will be thrown in their way when they will enter the environment of the healthcare sector. They provide guidance to the nurses at every step of their career (ACN, 2022).

What is the registered nurse role compared with other health professions? Write about the different roles in your own words. Please refer to the nursing pod entitled Interprofessional Education Pod.

The profession of nursing focuses on providing care to individuals and their family members so that they can recover from any disease or injury that they are suffering from and in maintaining optimum health and standard of living (DeNisco, 2021). The role of Registered nurses is different from the roles of any other healthcare professionals as they have a very wide range of practice as well as the approach towards providing medical care. They play a very important role in promoting health and wellness, mitigating diseases and injuries, providing care to all the individuals including those people who are mentally and physically disabled. They play a very important role in providing treatment and high-quality care to people who are critically sick (Smith, 2022). They also help in assessing the health status of the individuals and help them to go through their overall recovery process. The roles of the Registered nurse are to promote well-being and to reduce the risk of infection, to provide optimum care for the individuals that are physically as well as mentally ill, enrol in providing teaching and awareness regarding healthcare, work in an interprofessional team along with other members of the healthcare, monitor the training and education of other nurses and help in researches related to healthcare (Smith, 2022). The Registered nurses also advocate for their patient’s best interests all the time. They need to focus on providing holistic care when compared to professionals of other sectors of healthcare. They involve in making decisions so that they can represent the situation of patients and also in making recommendations if there is a requirement of it (Smith, 2022).

Identify at least one personal challenge for yourself as a graduate nurse and describe what the literature and evidence state about this challenge?

The profession of nursing can be rewarding as well as beneficial. But like any other profession, this job also comes with its own share of challenges. One personal challenge for me as a graduate nurse is burnout. As a nurse, I must work for 10 to 12 hours very frequently. When this shift is accompanied by the procedure of managing certain important administrative activities and changing them, they become even longer than that. These long hours become very hectic, both physically and mentally, and often lead to burnout. Mudallal, Othman & Al Hassan, (2017), the nursing burnout is a process that is widespread and characterized when the energy of the nurses is reduced, and it leads to getting exhausted both emotionally and physically. They start lacking motivation and start feeling frustrated which eventually leads to a reduction in their working efficiency. Dall’Ora, et al. (2020), concluded that burnout in nurses can result in pressure, low variety of tasks, high demands on the professional front, low level of independence, and poor relationship between the physician and the patient. Dall’Ora & Saville (2021), refer to burnout as fatigue and exhaustion. They, however, are a bit unclear regarding the symptoms of burnout. They still argue that the feeling of staying demotivated is linked to burnout or not.

What strategy or strategies can be identified in the literature to help manage this challenge you have identified as a graduate nurse?

Longer working hours, alternate shifts and the pressure of providing optimum care to the patients who are critically sick are some of the reasons which results into burnout of nurses. The burnout is divided into three components which are exhausting emotionally, depersonalization and having dissatisfaction even if it is their personal achievement. According to Roux & Benita, (2020), the strategies to overcome burnout are mindfulness and focused breathing. Mindfulness refers to the activity that helps in decreasing the stress that the person feels on daily basis. Using the techniques of mindfulness through activities such as workouts, yoga has been known to reduce stress that is related to burnout. It helps in allowing the mind of the person to give away any kind of negative energy and helps in focusing on their thoughts and thus concentrating on the tasks that require their immediate attention. Focused breathing is another kind of activity that has been proved to be reducing stress and can be done anytime.  The nurse can schedule it or can do it randomly anytime whenever they feel like it. Focused breathing includes inhaling after counting till 5, then holding the breath for 5 seconds, and then exhaling. De Oliveira, et al. (2021), suggested that forming a strong interpersonal relationship in the healthcare centre as well as their home can help the nurse who is going through burnout. When the nurses find out that there is someone that they can talk to when they are in distress can help them in balancing the pressures that they are having in situations that are full of stress. The nurses should set boundaries between their personal as well as professional life.

What is one challenge identified in the literature that a graduate nurse might face and describe the reasons given for this challenge?

Wong, et al. (2018), every nurse has faced the issue of transitioning from a student to a professional nurse. They require time so that they can adapt to their identity and role change. The graduate nurses are fresh and face challenges in getting adapted and developing relationships with their colleagues. This results in them feeling excluded in their work area. It results in low confidence levels and also poor performance. Due to a lack of any strong relationship, they also have to face bullying by their seniors. They are not able to share their feelings if they are distressed as they are not close to anyone. This becomes more difficult if they have to change their shifts.

Building relationships while transitioning is difficult because it is something that cannot be just done in a day. It requires skill, time, and most importantly patience. There can be factors such as lack of mutual trust, differences in personality, and competing interests which can make it difficult for the graduate nurses to form healthy relationships with their colleagues.

What strategy or strategies can be identified in the literature to help manage this challenge as a graduate nurse?

There are plenty of reasons why having a good work relationship with colleagues is important. When one has strong relationships with their colleagues, it can result in your workday being productive and also increase the chances of promotional opportunities. To build a relationship with colleagues, respect, trust, and communication are very important (Welp, Meier & Manser, 2016).

When one is open minded regarding their colleagues, it helps them to evolve through their daily chores, and also brings solutions if the nurse is stressing over someone. Respecting the co-worker’s opinion is also very crucial in building a relationship. It helps in giving honest opinions regarding their work which helps in building trust. It will help in cooperating and forming bonds with other co-workers (Welp, Meier & Manser, 2016).  The last tool that is helpful in maintaining relationships with co-workers is communication. It is very important in making sure that the patient is receiving all the necessary care and there is no chance of errors or mistakes which can result in adverse health outcomes. It will help in speaking up there is any potential issue or harm in the condition of the patient. Communication is very important in building trust which is very crucial for forming a relationship (Welp, Meier & Manser, 2016).
