The main focus of this paper is to summarize the argument that talks about how the Canadian government is trying to keep up with the rest of the world, and ban single use plastics within the country. The argument negates the role of these single use plastics as a major factor that contributes towards the high levels of pollution in the world.
As it is commonly known, plastics are extremely harmful for the environment, as they cannot decompose easily, and remain within the earth for a very long time. However, in the rising rates of pollution in the recent times, the government of Canada as well as a number of different countries have imposed a ban on single use plastics. However, comparing the different statistics and data available on this topic reveals that the contribution of single use plastics is not very high in Canada (Syberg et al., 2021).
One of the most important arguments in this area is the statistics of waste disposal. All Canadian had strict protocols that they have to follow when disposing off of plastics, so that they do not end up as litter. These indecomposable products are disposed of by the government in landfills and recycling processes. Statistics revealed that only 1% of the total plastic waste in Canada is disposed in the wrong, which indicates that most plastic waste reaches its correct destination, and is used in different ways to reduce the total generation of plastic waste. It is also revealed that Canada is not on the list of the Top 20 companies that are contributing towards the rising levels of plastic waste generation currently. Thus, the ban of plastics in Canada does not seem justified.
Another argument that the author placed forward is that of the importance and different uses of plastic that make it an important product for everyday use. The main reason behind the same is its ability to hold in liquid without spilling the same. It is also significantly stronger, and therefore performs better than bags of paper or plastic. It is also used in making many products like straws and cups that can be easily transported and produced in comparison to metal straws and foam cups. Studies conducted in this area reveals that bags made out of cloth or other material are often used only once, and therefore, does not make any impact in reducing waste generation within the country. Using it 7100 times, makes an impact on waste generation, which is not achievable. And finally, it was argued that plastics are products that are sanitary and prevent the growth of pathogens (Walker et al., 2021). It is also easier to produce and ship products made out of plastic.
Therefore, Canadians are very able to disposing of all plastic waste, and using it in the correct ways so as to ensure that the total plastic waste generation of the country is not very high. Moreover, use of single- use plastics is extremely useful in different areas as outlined above. Therefore, the decision made by the government of Canada to ban single use plastics in the country was not an informed one.
