SISFFIT012 Instruct Movement Programs to Children
Task
The following task involves interaction with children and adolescents and may require you to obtain a working with children check and parental consent prior to participation. Please check with your chosen facility and consult your local state legislation for more information.
Part A :
1. Source a program in your local community that delivers physical activity/movement programs for groups of children aged between 5-12 years old.
Chosen programs
After school care/holiday program
Make contact with the program organisers and arrange times to complete the following:
a) Are there any children who require referral and liaison with an allied health or medical professional? If so, outline the rationale why. If not outline two examples of children who would require a referral.
b) Summarise the organisation's screening and referral process prior to participation:
c) The supervisor identifies one child with behavioural issues who is prone to physical and/or verbal outbursts. Outline how this child would be cared for during the exercise program and an alternative option that could be implemented if this occurred.
d) Explain whether you beleive the child should be referred to an Allied Health or Medical Professional?
e) i) Are any parents/carers/guardians required to attend or be involved in the sessions? Outline the facility's policy in regards to this.
ii) One parent/guardian/carer has requested to sit in and observe the session. Outline the facility’s policy and how they can be accommodated.
f) The children have requested that there be music during the session. Outline what type of music is appropriate and how is it sourced?
Use the program and templates on the following pages to record the session plan for each of the three sessions. In your session plans, be sure to include:
- Session aims, goals and objectives
- Equipment requirements
- Safety considerations
- Description of activities (including order of activities and durations).
- Activities - throwing, jumping, kicking, running, skipping, hopping., climbing
- Appropriate intensity and volume
- Suitable order and sequence of activities
Evaluate your session programs by answering the following questions:
a) i) Outline one activity that one or more of the children found difficult.
ii) List three signs or behaviours you observed to indicate this?
b) How did you modify the session to address the difficulties? Outline two examples
c) How did your instructions, demonstrations and motivational strategies change to cater for a younger age group? Outline two examples.
d) How did your instruction performance in Session 3 compare to the instruction performance you observed from the facilitator in Session 1?
e) Outline two aspects of the session the participants benefited from or enjoyed the most? Why?
f) Identify any modifications would you make to improve the session design and instruction in the future?
Part B
Source a program in your local community that delivers physical activity/movement programs for groups of adolescents aged between 13-17 years old. The program may be for groups of participants or an individual participant. Suggested programs include:
- Sports club
- Dance school
- After school care/holiday program
- Primary school
- Gym/Fitness Centre
- Scouts
a) Provide details of your chosen program. Include name and location of the organisation and summarise the type of programs they provide:
Meet with the program organisers prior to your first session and discuss the following:
a) Are there any participants with specific needs or preferences that must be considered? Summarise how you would include them in the activities. If there are no children with specific needs or preferences, outline how this could be done for one adolescent with specific needs or preferences.
b) Are there any adolescents who require referral and liaison with an allied health or medical professional? Summarise the organisation's screening and referral process prior to participation:
c) How is parent/carer/guardian consent obtained prior to participating in the session?
d) The participants have requested music during the session. Outline the type of music that would be appropriate and how is it sourced?

a) Outline an activity from your original session plans that you needed to modify during the session instruction.
b) Outline two examples of how your instructions, demonstrations and motivational strategies differed to that used for the younger children (ages 5-12).
c) Outline two tips you learnt from observing the facilitator in Session 1 & 2?
d) Outline two aspects of the session the participants benefited from or enjoyed the most? Why?
e) Outline two modifications you would make to the session design and instruction in the future.
