Darcy is subject to Community Corrections Order (CCO) for recklessly causing serious injury. He was under the influence of alcohol at the time of his offending. The day of his offence Darcy was drinking with peers and caught public transport home from his friend’s house. While on the bus he was playing music on his phone, loudly. A fellow passenger asked him to turn the noise down and Darcy became enraged by this request, subsequently assaulting the passenger, leaving him seriously injured.
Darcy is twenty years old, the youngest of six children and comes from a low socio-economic background. His father is in prison and has been most of Darcy’s life. His mother is a good support, however, has substance abuse problems and is currently subject to a Drug Treatment Order for her long-standing cannabis addiction. Darcy resides with his mother and she takes him to most appointments. His siblings are much older and have families of their own, however, it is noted most of his siblings have been in trouble with the justice system at some point in their life.
Darcy has a mistrust for government agencies as he was taken away from his parents, becoming a ward of the state at the age of 5 years. He becomes highly agitated when told what to do, especially by authoritative figures.
Darcy states that he has a ‘good’ circle of friends who support him. However, it is noted they have contact with the criminal justice system regularly. In his free time, Darcy likes to work on old cars with his friends. He regularly enjoys attending car rallies in the country. He has a history of driving offences and currently does not have his licence. He is known to attend illegal car races and has lost two friends to drag racing accidents in the suburbs.
He has a mild intellectual disability and was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) disorder at the age of eleven. He was medicated as a child, however, now self-medicates with cannabis.
Darcy has significant self-control and aggression issues, which he recognises but struggles to talk about. However, he has admitted that he has been the victim of family violence, with the perpetrator being one of his brothers. He has identified alcohol to be a big factor of his violence issues.
Darcy is currently unemployed. He did not like school and subsequently dropped out in year 9. He has no formal qualifications or work history, having only completed minor labour jobs with family members for cash. He has expressed interest in obtaining his white card and getting into construction work.
(A White Card is a mandatory requirement for construction workers in Australia. This means that if you want to work in the construction industry, you have to have one. Even if you are only visiting Australia for a short period of time on a working holiday visa, you are not allowed to work on a construction site without a White Card.)
