Specifically, on successful completion of this assessment pre-service teachers should be able to: Review and apply knowledge and understanding of the mathematics underpinning critical numeracy APST 2.1, 2.2, 2.5 Identify, analyse, evaluate and reflect upon critical numeracy situations in media reports and in school contexts (relevant to different curriculum areas and contexts). APST 2.5, 5.4 Complete, analyse and reflect upon an educational numeracy activity. APST 2.5, 3.6, 5.4 Connection to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: APST 2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching areas: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area. APST 2.2 Content selection and organisation: Organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence. APST 2.5 Literacy and numeracy strategies: Know and understand literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application in teaching areas. APST 3.6 Evaluate and improve teaching programs: Demonstrate broad knowledge of strategies that can be used to evaluate teaching programs to improve student learning. APST 5.4 Interpret student data: Demonstrate the capacity to interpret student assessment data to evaluate student learning and modify teaching practice. Task Outline: This assessment is about using numeracy data as evidence to assist in making decisions designed to improve your teaching. The numeracy data consists of the results of one NAPLAN Numeracy test for a school cohort. Refer to the Supporting documents on Study Desk. With the provided numeracy data, develop a professional report for a school that will inform decision making and future planning for this cohort of students. The report should contain an introduction, parts A, B and C and conclusion. In part A - Identify the concepts tested Describe what is being tested in relation to the current Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. In part B - Analyse student answers Based on your analysis of the data in the Item Analysis Report, select one question from each class group and two from across the cohort to discuss. For each question, state: why you have chosen this question. Use the data to inform your response. the breakdown of correct and incorrect responses. possible reasons for the incorrect responses. This will be strengthened with references to the literature and the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. the relevant skills required, as listed in the National Minimum Standards (https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/numeracy/minimum-standards) In part C - Pedagogical plans For each question, state: a suggested teaching strategy or strategies identified to target the misconceptions or required learning of the students. Use a valid pedagogical approach and demonstrate your understanding of the mathematical skills, understanding and learning progression required in this area.
