The following written questions use a range of “instructional words” such as “identify” or “explain”, which tell you how you should answer the question. Use the definitions below to assist you to provide the type of response expected.

Analyse – when a question asks you to analyse something, you should do so in in detail, and identify important points and key features. Generally, you are expected to write a response one or two paragraphs long.

Compare – when a question asks you to compare something, you will need to show how two or more things are similar, ensuring that you also indicate the relevance of the consequences. Generally, you are expected to write a response one or two paragraphs long.

Contrast – when a question asks you to contrast something, you will need to show how two or more things are different, ensuring you indicate the relevance or the consequences. Generally, you are expected to write a response one or two paragraphs long.

Discuss – when a question asks you to discuss something, you are required to point out important issues or features, and express some form of critical judgement. Generally, you are expected to write a response one or two paragraphs long.

Describe – when a question asks you to describe something, you should state the most noticeable qualities or features. Generally, you are expected to write a response two or three sentences long.

Evaluate – when a question asks you to evaluate something, you should do so putting forward arguments for and against something. Generally, you are expected to write a response one or two paragraphs long.

Examine – when a question asks you to examine something, this is similar to “analyse”, where you should provide a detailed response with key points and features and provide critical analysis. Generally, you are expected to write a response one or two paragraphs long.

Explain – when a question asks you to explain something, you should make clear how or why something happened or the way it is. Generally, you are expected to write a response two or three sentences long.

Identify – when a question asks you to identify something, this means that you are asked to briefly describe the required information. Generally, you are expected to write a response two or three sentences long.

 List – when a question asks you to list something, this means that you are asked to briefly state information in a list format.

Outline – when a question asks you to outline something, this means giving only the main points, Generally, you are expected to write a response a few sentences long.

Summarise – when a question asks you to summarise something, this means (like “outline”) only giving the main points. Generally, you are expected to write a response a few sentences long.

Task summary

For this assessment task you are required in the role of Marketing Officer for Aus Health Spa to develop a research brief to outline how you propose to conduct required research into identifying trends and opportunities in the wellness and spa industry in order to assist in identifying actions that can be taken to increase the business’s sales.

This task will be completed in the simulated work environment at your RTO.

Carefully read the following:

Aus Health Spa is located in the outer suburbs of Sydney and offers a range of services, including massages, and body and skin treatments. The Health Spa also includes a fitness centre, for which memberships are available. There are currently around 50 permanent members of the fitness centre. All other users are casual users of both the spa and fitness centre. Currently, users can only be members of the fitness centre and all other services are paid for per use.

The Health Spa has been established for 2 years, during which time, use of the Spa has steadily increased, resulting in an excellent operating profit. Most users are locals.

The owner of Aus Health Spa is interested in finding out more about member needs and ways to increase business sales.

In the role of the Marketing Officer for the business, you have been asked to conduct research into the above, including trends and opportunities in the sector.

As there is a limited budget only for marketing research, the owner of the business has advised that it will be necessary to identify and use secondary research information sources about the health spa industry, statistics and emerging trends and opportunities.

A newly created feedback register is also to be reviewed to identify areas or research to be conducted in relation to member needs. The feedback register records feedback from service users and is a relatively recent initiative with feedback documented from March 2016.  T

Complete the following activities:

  1. Complete the following tasks to develop a research brief for Aus Health Spa using the template provided by your assessor:
  2. Identify the research objectives of the research to be conducted
  3. Identify research methods to be utilised, including an explanation of why the proposed method of research are suitable for the proposed research, as well as how they are valid and reliable.
  4. List at least 10 key words and phrases (including Boolean operators) to use in online research to identify relevant sources of information.
  5. Use the key words and phrases, including Boolean operators, to identify and document at least 5 information sources that you will use for the research, including both electronic and non-electronic sources. Document the web site reference and/or name and title of the publication of each of these reference sources and summarise the information that the web site or publication will provide to assist you with your research.
  6. Review the information in the feedback register and based on your review and analysis, identify at least three areas to be reviewed as part of the research.
  7. Send a copy of your completed research brief via email to your assessor indicating that this is the research brief to be discussed at the meeting (in Part B).

For this assessment task you will be required to participate in a meeting to discuss your research brief and to seek approval to conduct the research as outlined in your research brief.

This task will be completed in the simulated work environment at your RTO.

Complete the following activities

  1. Meet with your assessor in the role of the owner of the business on the agreed date and time to discuss the research brief.
  2. At the meeting, you will need to:
  • Provide an introduction to the meeting
  • Discuss key points from the briefing report, included proposed research activities.
  • Seek feedback on the proposed research and approval to proceed.
  1. During the meeting, you will need to demonstrate effective communication skills including:
  • Responding to questions about the proposed research
  • Asking questions to seek feedback about the proposed research.
  • Use of active listening techniques to confirm and clarify understanding

Organise all of your work in suitable folders and provide a screen shot showing how you have organised the documents and the folders that you will use to store the research that you will conduct in Assessment Task 3.   2. Following the meeting update your briefing report as required based on feedback provided by your assessor and email the screen shot as indicated above.
Assessment Task 3: Conduct, analyse and report on research

Task summary

This assessment tasks requires you to conduct and present your research as set out in the research brief you developed for Assessment Task 2.

Presentation participants will be the owner of Aus Health Spa (role-played by your assessor), as well as a number of your fellow students (role playing staff members),

This task will be completed in the simulated work environment at your RTO.

Complete the following activities:

  1. Conduct the research according to your research brief including:
  • Review the information sources you have identified to provide an analysis of trends and opportunities in the health spa industry.
  • Conduct the research based on your review of the feedback register. Ensure that you refer to, and follow, the Aus Health Spa workplace information policy and procedure in regard to confidentiality and privacy requirements.
  1. Analyse the data gained from your research. Document key findings that are relevant to the research objectives. Develop a PowerPoint presentation to communicate these findings.

Your PowerPoint slides should include graphics to illustrate the research information and analysis. Your presentation should last for approximately 15 minutes, and you should be prepared to answer questions.

  1. Develop recommendations for increasing membership and sales based on the research you have conducted. Include your recommendations in the presentation.
  2. Conduct the presentation of your research at the time and date advised by your assessor as follows:
  • Introduce your presentation including its purpose and outline of content to be delivered.
  • At the outset of the presentation, indicate that the audience will be able to ask questions during/at the end of the presentation (as relevant)
  • Clearly deliver presentation content using power points developed and according to the research brief and in the time specified.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills including:
  • Speaking clearly and concisely
  • Responding to questions
  • Use of active listening techniques to confirm and clarify understanding
  • Summarise key points throughout the presentation to aid understanding.
  • Provide a conclusion to the presentation.
  • Seek feedback on your findings and research.
Following the presentation, send the PowerPoint file as an email attachment to your assessor. Attach also an updated screen shot, showing how you have organised all your files in accordance with the Aus Health Spa workplace information policy and procedure.

In the email outline that the feedback was provided to you at the presentation and how you will use the feedback provided.
