BIOL8600 Biology Research Experience
Task
The final report is a scientific paper (max 4000 words excluding references) formatted in the style of a specified scientific journal (selected in consultation with your supervisor). You will need to state the Journal that the report has been prepared for and provide a link to the journal instructions with your submitted report.
It is expected that your report will include a Title, Author details, Keywords, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, and References, and be accompanied by appropriate Figures and/or Tables. The exact subheadings and formatting used may vary according to the journal you select. It is suggested that you review papers from your selected journal to get an idea of contents and writing style.
The Introduction and Materials and Methods, will be based on your Assessment 2 submission, but should be revised according to feedback received.
The Results section should provide a brief and concise description of results and be supported by clear, well labelled Figures (graphs/diagrams) and Tables. Where your project involves data collection, it is expected that you will present summarised (i.e. not raw) data that is supported by appropriate statistical analysis. The Discussion section should address whether your hypotheses were supported or rejected, explain your results, and their significance (noting any caveats or limitations), and place your results in the context of other relevant research.
You should also provide recommendations for further research directions in the future. Discussion checklist: Were hypotheses accepted or rejected? What do the results mean? How do your results compare with those of previous researchers? Were there any assumptions, flaws in the study that limit the application/significance of results? Suggest future directions for research What are the implications of the results? The Abstract should summarise all sections of your report, including project background, hypotheses, methods, results and their interpretation.
It should not contain references or statistics, and should conform to the formatting requirements (e.g. word limit) of your nominated journal. References and citations should follow the style of your nominated journal. As with Assessment 2, it is expected that at least 20 references are cited. These are the introduction paper and report paper of this unit and final paper has to be done. I will give necessary intructions and materials in upcoming 1-2 days
