Borders have been a topical issue throughout history, however these issues remain prominent in the contemporary context, often on a daily basis. By keeping a weekly diary of border issues throughout the semester, you will gain an appreciation of the frequency, diversity and global-span of contemporary border issues.

Task

From weeks 2-11 you are expected to make ONE diary entry per week (10 in total). Select one-two media article/s per week on one border-related news item that has occurred within the past 7 days.

Write a summary of the issue in 200 words for each week’s entry, highlighting key issues, and clearly articulating how this is a border-related issue. Each week must address a different border issue. You should address a variety of regions across the globe throughout the semester (i.e. not 10 entries on the U.S.-Mexico border). As we discuss in this unit, borders (and their related issues) come in a variety of forms – conflicts between two or more nation states, land borders, maritime borders, fencing, electronic surveillance, border-crossing related deaths, etc. Border related matters often occur at a variety of locations also – airports, seaports, detention centres, etc.
