Task 2: Evacuation Drill - Demonstration
Special note:
Part 1 – Simulated Emergency Drill is the same as the one being completed for CHCECE016 Establish and maintain a safe and healthy environment for children
In consultation with your workplace supervisor, organise a time to conduct a practise emergency evacuation at the service. If there is no emergency drill that occurs during your work placement, you will need to consult with your TAFE Assessor to organise a time to complete the drill in a simulated environment.
Simulation:
If your workplace supervisor verifies that an emergency drill has not taken place during your work placement, this task will be completed in TAFE simulated environment. The student will need to access and read the Emergency Evacuation Policy available from https://www.brightmindsearlylearning.com.au/images/documents/Emergency-Evacuation-Policy-V4.1.17.pdf (accessed 14 July 2020). You will also need access to the emergency plan to identify the location of exit points and assembly areas.
During the emergency drill, you will be required to demonstrate the following skills. The assessor/workplace supervisor will observe you during the drill and add comments on your demonstrated skills in the evidence guide at the end of this assessment.
As part of this demonstration, you will be expected to:
Identifies and immediately responds to the signal of emergency evacuation
Correctly follows the emergency evacuation procedure by:
- Assisting staff to guide children to an emergency exit and check all sleep rooms, children’s toilets and small spaces in rooms/outdoor areas.
- Directing children to designated emergency evacuation points and the nominated assembly area.
- Talking to children during and after the emergency evacuation, helping them to remain calm, informing them about what they are doing well and explaining to them the importance of doing the emergency evacuation drill
- Supporting staff to mark the roll
- Listening and following the designated fire warden/ nominated supervisor instructions on when it’s safe to re-enter the building
- Assisting staff to guide children back into their service rooms or outdoor play areas
Follows any other action that is included in the policy, procedure or emergency evacuation plan
Following the practise emergency evacuation, inform children of one thing they did well during the evacuation and discuss why practising is important. Record a summary of your discussion.
Write a short notice (such as a Kinderloop or Storypark post or a note for display) for families informing them about the service participating in a practice emergency evacuation. Include details about why drills are conducted and how the drill went.
If you are completing this task in a service then get approval from your workplace supervisor before distributing to families.
