Introduction

The purpose of this assessment is to practise Building Measurement principles as per the Australian Standard Method of Measurement (ASMM), and then produce a Bill of Quantities (a sample of core elements) through computerised methods. The computerised method for this assessment involves using CostX software.

You will be given access to ‘drawings’ and ‘specifications’ relevant to two different options for building projects. 

• Building P - for practice (formative)
• Building G - for grading (summative assessment)

The learning process involves:

1. Attending to the weekly course materials and observing the step by step guides.

2. Practising the skills: produce your own Practice CostX file for Building P. 

3. Applying the learning: Apply what you have learned to complete your assessment with Building G.

Course Objectives:

The objective of this assessment is to help you develop Course Objective 3 and, in part, Course Objective 2:

• CO1. Describe the role and duties of Quantity Surveyors in relation to pre and post contract procedures

• CO2. Explain the functions of the bills of quantities in procurement of building projects

• CO3. Measure and take off building quantities for simple domestic construction according to standard measurement rules

Assessment Description:

For your assessment you will create a partial Bill of Quantities for a building (Building G). Please note that you will not be measuring and billing all the items required in any given trade. Rather the objective is to produce a sample of items to determine if you have grasped the general concept of building measurement and specifically the principles of using CostX.

You will be building up a progressive file week by week. 

You are required to submit this assessment in three parts in Week 3, Week 7 and then the whole Bill of Quantities CostX file for Building G including the Appendix in Week 10. Keep a record of what you have amended and include it in your final submission.

Corrections to drawings

1. The wall skins to be corrected as the external brick skin and the internal partition skin in drawings ‘GA03 1B Sections’ and ‘GA01 1B Plans’.

2. External skin to be brick for the whole building and ignore the CL-01 finish in the drawing ‘GA02 1B Elevations’.

3. Note that the top and bottom plates of the stud partitions are 90 x 45 and NOT 90 x 35 as shown on the drawings.
