INFS5870 Operations Management
Task
In your assigned Groups of 2, select an organisation that you are either familiar with (you may, or may have, worked there) or will research. The organisation should have a focus on manufacturing or operations such as an airline, resort operator with a high level of direct customer contact. You may also focus on services operations.
You may choose to focus on an organisation in another industry but you should seek advice from your lecturer first.
For this organisation, you should identify two operational issues or aspects incorporating a range of topics covered in this subject. These may include, but necessarily be limited to:-
1. Operational Strategy in Global context
2. Project managing implementation of a new operation
3 Forecasting of demand and resources
4. Location strategy
5. Quality Management and Process Design
6. Inventory Management
7. Job Design
8. Or any other operational aspect studied in the subject.
You need to nominate the operational aspects of your research by Week 8
(a) You may instead choose to take on the role of a consultant and conduct an audit of the operation in your chosen aspect of the organisation.
(b) Another approach may be to identify a ‘star performing’ organisation or Strategic Business Unit within the organisation and use it to benchmark the industry. You would then show how the organisation meets this benchmark.
You must seek approval from your lecturer if you wish to undertake this approach
Make appropriate recommendations based on your findings and the conclusions you have drawn.
You are required to prepare a report of 2,000 words (approximately 1000 words per group member) based on the above incorporating relevant theory and additional readings when analysing your chosen company.

You must include a coversheet with your submission.
Assignments not submitted will be deemed incomplete and penalties for late assignments will apply.
Only one team member to submit assignment ensuring that details of all team memebers are included on the cover sheet. the filename must be ‘group assignment.doc’.
Each other team member must submit a coversheet with all team member details noted on the coversheet. the filename must be ‘coversheet.doc’. If you do not submit coversheet, you will not be graded.
Assignments which are submitted late will be subject to a late penalty of 10% of the available mark for each day the assignment is late unless prior approval is obtained.
