would you see HRM and why? 1000, 2 each.
1.Argument points in main body of essay (Mechanical engineering work approach).
• Mechanistic job design involves decreased training time and less likelihood of errors, as well as lower job satisfaction and lower motivation.
• The mechanical engineering approach adopts Taylorism and Fordism ideologies.
• Taylorism fragments work deskills workers and aims to establish organisational authority within management.
• Fordism shifts capitalism to consumer capitalism with mass production; this has led to the production lines.
• Fordism also pushed standardisation, which can be seen in RMG factories creating clothing of standard
sizes (S,M,L, XL, etc).
• Fordism divides labour into horizontal and vertical.
• Horizontal division breaks down work into segments and alieanates the worker from the product.
• Vertical division categorizes the production into a managerial top-down fashion where top design tasks operates the ones below. (This might lead to misuse of power, as can be seen in the case study, to force labour into mishaps)
• Latest stage of mechanical engineering approach is McDonaldisation, which strives to find optimal method to boost volume of sales in the fastest way possible. (Again, demand for cheap clothing in fastest way possibly relates to mcdonaldisation.)
• It also implements the increased managerial control to ensure employees are standardised and uniform. (Potential for wage theft as seen in Dhaka - $0.35/hr)
• Employees must be informed about the potential health hazards of their jobs, and employers must make every effort possible to control or eliminate such hazards. This is not only an ethical issue, but a legal one as well. Failure to provide a safe work environment can result in compensation awards. Permanence of effects on worker health is irrelevant. (Ergonomic – Biological work approach)
• Aims to reduce and eventually eliminate the physical strains of work processes, creating an environment that supports the way the human body works (Essential for sweatshop factories in BD)
• Reduces RSI: Repetitive Strain Injuries (Sewing machines in factory lines)
• One method is through rotation of project teams, the purpose of which is to achieve an organizational goal.
• Aims to meet goals through an organizational effort rather than an individualistic one.
• Promotes Quality of Working Life in order to increase individual power, enhance employee participation in management, secure fairness and equality at work, create support mechanisms, use create meaningful work, ensures social relevance of the work or product, positively affects work activities, ensure adequate compensation and healthy work environment (much needed for rmg factories), increase social integration, produce dignitity and respect for employees, and a sensible work-family interface.
• Promote work life balance A discussion argument between mechanical engineering and Ergonomic in an Easy format which highlights introduction, the body and the conclusion.
