Essay Format and Structure

Type the essay in 12-point font and paginate it, using single-sided pages and double-spacing. Structure the essay as follows:

2. Introduction (provide a brief description of the aims of the essay)

3. Uncertainty (use concepts taught on the subject to define the term ‘uncertainty’; referring to the Delta variant of Covid-19, use Pol and Reveley (2017) to explain why it is difficult to make accurate predictions under conditions of uncertainty)

4. Ethical problems (identify ethical problems that arise when – in a state of uncertainty – a member of a profession or an opinion leader makes predictions about the course of the Covid-19 pandemic that can have a detrimental effect on other people; give examples)

5. Ethical symmetry (use concepts taught on the subject to define the term ‘symmetrical ethics’; use Sandis and Taleb (2017) to explain whether achieving greater ethical symmetry can help to overcome the preceding problems)

6. Conclusion (summarise the central themes and findings of the essay)

Employees, managers and other organisational stakeholders are experiencing considerable uncertainty due to the emergence of the Delta variant of Covid-19. With this development in mind, explain why it is difficult to make accurate predictions about the future under conditions of uncertainty. Then discuss the ethical problems that arise when – in a state of uncertainty – a member of a profession or an opinion leader (e.g. a CEO, an economic forecaster, a politician, or a journalist) makes predictions about the course of the Covid-19 pandemic that can have a detrimental effect on other people. Give examples from the media commentary on the pandemic. To what extent, if at all, can symmetrical ethics overcome these ethical problems?

You must cite in your essay the two Week 5 readings – namely, Sandis and Taleb (2017) on symmetrical ethics and Pol and Reveley (2017) on uncertainty – as well as at least five other academic journal articles relevant to the topic. Media commentary can be obtained from websites (appropriately referenced).
