Part I. Business Report
Late last year MultiCo, a German International Manufacturing Corporation won a prestigious threeyear infrastructure contract in Australia. MultiCo is responsible for the project management which includes managing several different Australian and international providers and suppliers. A newly established project team based in Sydney Australia will be managed by a German project manager from MultiCo’s head office. The German project manager realises that his newly established project team - consisting of Australian, German, Italian and Chinese subject matter experts - might face some cultural challenges as they have never worked with each other. He wants to have an in-depth research into how to enhance the performance of multicultural project teams: what are challenges and opportunities that multicultural teams face, and how can he assist his culturally diverse team to better prepare them for the tasks at hand and to enhance team performance? The German project manager asks you – a Master’s Graduate who aspires to become a manager in a global organisation - to advise him about managing multicultural teams for high performance, and to outline an approach to prepare for multicultural team challenges. The report needs to include:
i. Identify what would a high-performance multicultural team look like?
- Identify and review challenges and opportunities of multicultural teams.
- Analyse and explain how leadership, decision-making, and communication impact multicultural teams.
ii. Recommend suitable actions for the German manager to overcome possible cultural challenges.
iii. Conclusion and way to go forward for the multicultural project team.
