Scenario:
You have been hired as a consultant by an Australian higher educational institution to assist with creating a report for the Chief Technology Officer. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tertiary institution is interested in exploring ways in which it can utilize Artificial Intelligence (such as chatbots, Robotic Process Automation, Machine Learning, etc.) to ensure it can continue to offer services to its students in a safe way. The institution would like to understand different ways that Artificial Intelligence may be implemented to provide services to students. This could be providing services such as learning and teaching activities, delivering student support services or student onboarding and even improving health and safety measures. The selected institution has domestics, on campus and off campus students, as well as national and international enrolments.
The institution would like to identify a use case that it can test and implement within the next six months. A use case is a specific application of Artificial Intelligence. This is to be within a specific focus area for the institution, such as for course delivery, student support services or student onboarding etc. For example:
- If an Artificial Intelligence (AI) type of Chatbots is selected, a use case (or application of the AI) could be applied to provide students with assistance inselecting/changing courses.
- If an Artificial Intelligence type of Machine Learning is selected, a use case
(or application of the AI) could be to analyse app check-in data to advise students when lecture rooms are full which helps ensure the university adheres to COVID social distancing requirements.
- If an Artificial Intelligence type of Machine Learning is selected, a use case (or application of the AI) could be to analyse app check-in data to determine the highest traffic area’s in the university to better understand where more hand sanitisation stations are required and how frequently these need to be replenished.
The management and board of the institution believes there is significant merit in implementing Artificial Intelligence to not only ensure the ongoing safety or both students and staff, but to also create a competitive advantage and point of difference to other higher education institutions. However, the institution has concerns around its existing technology stack and its ability to be able to effectively integrate Artificial Intelligence technology within that. This would also need to be considered. This may be achieved by incorporating Artificial Intelligence technology by partnering with technology partners.
Your initial task is to develop a Use Case Report for the Chief Technology Officer of the institution to outline a number of use cases for Artificial Intelligence and then to select a specific use case to implement and test to validate this is a good approach. They would like to be able to do this within a 6-month period. The institution offers higher education services primarily to Australian residents. The institution has more than 50,000 students each year and offers both on-campus and online learning options.
Your task is to develop a professional business report for the CTO of the institution. In the business report, you are expected to develop the Use Case Report focusing on how a specific type of Artificial Intelligence may be used and then to identify a single use case for a specific area of focus.
