 This task must include access to:

  • Organisational WHS policies and procedures required to demonstrate the performance evidence
  • WHS laws required to demonstrate the performance evidence
  • Case studies and, where possible, real situations
  • Opportunities for interaction with others

 For this task you are to complete the following activity to demonstrate your ability to ensure a safe workplace for a work area.

 To prepare for the task, complete the following actions to establish a WHS management system in the work area:

  1. Locate and adapt the WHS policies that define the organisation’s commitment to complying with WHS laws, communicate these to the relevant workplace personnel, and adopt them throughout your work

  2. Working according to WHS laws, policies, procedures and programs, identify, and record, the duty holders, and document definitions of the WHS responsibilities for all workplace personnel in the work area

  3. Identify the financial and human resources required by the WHS management system (WHSMS), and approve these according to organisational procedures. Record the financial and human resources required and provide evidence of their approval.

 Complete the following steps to establish and maintain the consultative arrangements for managing WHS in the work area, ensuring these are effective and compliant:

  1. Working with the required personnel, and according to required WHS laws, set up and maintain consultative arrangements. Record these consultative arrangements.

  2. Conduct participation and consultation arrangements, according to required WHS laws and organisational protocols, to resolve issues that are raised. Record the issues raised and the outcomes of participation and consultation arrangements

  3. Provide information about the outcomes of consultation and participation to the required personnel, according to organisational policies and procedures

 Establish and maintain procedures for effectively identifying hazards, and assessing and controlling risks in work area through the following actions:

  1. Develop, document and maintain the procedures for:
  2. Ongoing hazard identification
  3. The assessment of their associated risks

  4. Selecting and implementing risk controls according to the hierarchy of control measures and WHS legislative requirements

  5. At the planning, design and evaluation stages of any workplace change, including and conduct hazard identification to ensure that new hazards are not created by the proposed changes and that any existing hazards are controlled. Record the hazards identified during the planning, design and evaluation stages of any workplace change.

  6. Considering the hierarchy of control measures and WHS legislative requirements, identify inadequacies in the existing risk controls, and promptly provide resources to enable the implementation of new measures. Record any inadequacies, and the resources implemented to address them.

  7. Identify any requirements for expert WHS advice, and request this advice as required, according to organisational procedures. Note all sources of WHS advice accessed.

 Evaluate and maintain the work area WHSMS through completion of the following actions:

  1. As part of the organisation’s training program, develop a WHS induction and training program, and provide training for required personnel in the work area. Provide the WHS induction and training program, and note any training provided.

  2. Use an appropriate WHS recordkeeping system to identify of patterns of occupational injury and disease in the organisation, and to maintain a record of WHS decisions made, including reasons for decisions

  3. Measure and evaluate the WHSMS according to organisation’s quality systems framework to ensure compliance with WHS legislative framework to achieve, as a minimum, WHS legal requirements, developing and implementing improvements to the WHSMS to achieve the WHS legal requirements and the organisational WHS objectives, according to organisational procedures. Document this evaluation, including any improvements implemented to ensure compliance with WHS legal requirements and the organisational WHS objectives.
