Scenario:
The Proposed Housing Project (see relevant project drawings in vuws under assessment 2 folder) is now at the tender stage. Your construction organisation is invited to submit a tender for this project. The senior estimator has divided the work between several estimating teams. Your team is requested to price preliminaries for this given project. Your aim should be to make a strong impression to the senior estimator by demonstrating your estimating and researching skills and preparing a preliminary estimate that maximises chances of winning the tender.
Task:
Prepare a report with below sections to address the above scenario.
Section A: Preliminaries Bill
This section should include a priced preliminaries bill for the above project scenario. We are not requesting you to price the full preliminary bill, instead to price selected items as suggested below:
Select to price ONE cost-significant preliminary item from below 8 categories, so you will end up pricing 8 preliminary items in total (a full preliminaries checklist is attached in vuws under assessment 2 folder).
- Employers requirements
- Management and Staff
- Facilities and Services
- Temporary works
- Site Accommodation
- Contract Conditions
- Mechanical Plant
- Non-mechanical plant
Calculate the project cost using a suitable preliminary estimating technique (detailed calculations are not expected) and calculate the project duration using AIQS cost guide. These are needed to finalise preliminaries bill.
Show how you developed the price for each of the above selected item
Details of the pricing sources, pricing approach and assumptions made for each pricing item are required to be included in the report, with evidences attached to the report as appendices (for example, a quotation image could be included as an appendix and referred to in the report, where the price development for that item is described).
- Produce the final preliminary bill in a Bills of Quantities format for the selected items.
- Compile all above work into Section A of your report (about 1500 words- not strictly word counted due to the nature of the task).
Section B: Estimating Software
If you were to use a popular estimating software to produce the priced Bill of Quantities for the given project, which software would you use?
To answer above question, please research and report on two popular estimating software used in the industry (e.g. costx, cubit). You may include below points for this report:
- Key features/ functions of the specific software
- Benefits of using the selected estimating software
Please justify your statements and findings in this section with relevant in-text referencing that should match with your end list references (about 500 words).
Submission format: Please follow a general report structure with a title page, brief introduction, Section A and B as detailed above, conclusions, references and appendices.
Late submissions: A late submission without approval for an extension will be penalised by 10 per cent per calendar day up to 10 days (see Learning Guide). Extensions will only be considered under approved Special Considerations.
