Reflective Online Journal Entry
The lessons that we were taught from the chapter gave us an opportunity to learn about the dynamics in family set-up over time. I was delighted to learn about family as a basic unit in the society that brings people together to live and share love, experiences, opportunities, and challenges.
The most outstanding lesson that I acquired from the reading is that the family setting is not static because it has been changing from time to time. Meaning, family is no longer what it used to be in the past. In the past, a nuclear family that mainly comprised of the parents and siblings was highly regarded. It was, indeed, the basic it of socialization to every other child/person. It gave individuals a natural unit to cling to and socialize with (Wilding 111). However, today, nuclear family has tremendously changed. It is no longer a small set-up only linked by blood, but a dynamic collection of people who are linked through different ways (Salter 11644). The authors candidly express that family can today not only be joined by blood, but be joined by adoption and others. That is why, in the contemporary society, there exists the matrifocal, single parent, childless, same sex couple, foster, adoptive, surrogacy, and blended families. Each of these arrangements are gaining popularity because they are accepted in the society no matter how controversial they might be to some observers.
In conclusion, I concur with the authors for acknowledging the dynamics in family settings. It is true that all the above family arrangements exist in the society. That happens because, in the contemporary society, people have normalized the initially ‘weird’ practices like same-sex marriage, friendship of benefit, adoption, open relationships, and polyamorous relationships.
